How to build your hair care regimen schedule/routine #47

Focus on how often your hair likes to do the things mentioned below and forget curl typing altogether! Your hair’s porosity and thickness will determine which ingredients and products to use. Answer the questions in each section to help you build a schedule of your own. You can download a printable blank template here.

CLEANSING & SHAMPOO

How often should you be shampooing and deep cleansing your hair? Which products and ingredients work best for your hair type? The general rule is to avoid sulphates and silicones, but you can use what works best for your hair.

CONDITIONING & DEEP CONDITIONING

How often does your hair like to be deep conditioned? What about a regular conditioner? Does co-washing work for you? Decide what would suit your lifestyle best. If you exercise a lot maybe co-washing with a product fit for the purpose is not such a bad idea as this will refresh your strands without stripping natural oils.

STYLING & TRIMMING

Which hairstyles suit you best? Is it protective styles or low manipulation styles? Are you a wash and go or a twist out person? Determine what would work for you including your lifestyle and hair texture. For example, if your hair is fine then those heavy goddess braids might not be the best for you, but loose Ghana braids might be better. Regular trims will keep split ends and breakage at bay.

MOISTURISING & REFRESHING

What is your hair thickness and porosity? If high, then focus on spritzing hair daily with water to rehydrate strands and using oils to seal moisture before styling. If low, then hair steam treatments might be for you. Use styling products with ingredients that suit your hair properties, heavy oils are high porosity and thick hair best friends but would weigh down someone with the same porosity but fine hair. Choose accordingly.

NOURISHING & PROTEIN BALANCE

Are you getting the right nutrition from your diet? Several vitamins and minerals are essential to maintain a healthy hair structure. Lack of vitamins A, D, E, iron, zinc, biotin, selenium, amino acids, and proteins are all linked to hair loss and breakage*. If you have any type of chemical hair treatment you might benefit from protein treatments as they will fill gaps where the hair shaft was damaged.

TECHNIQUES

Which techniques work best for your hair? Is it combing with a wide-tooth comb from ends to roots when drenched in conditioner? Or finger detangling? What about raking and shingling? Or smoothing down hair with both hands closed? Is it best to work in sections? Try different techniques and see which ones your hair prefers.
