Curls and Kurls| 3c-4b Creative Natural Hair Icon USA

Hello darling, introduce yourself.

Hello! If we’re Instagram buddies, then you already know me as “Curls and Kurls” or the “CKGal.” I live in the grand state of Arizona where it’s so hot in the summer that you can scramble an egg on the sidewalk. I’m also an undergrad student majoring in History.

How long have you been a fierce natural girl and what made you do this choice?

As a twenty-something millennial, I’m proud to say that I’ve been natural my entire life. Initially, the choice to become a naturalista was of my parents doing. Our pact was simple, I would rock virgin hair that hasn’t been chemically processed, coloured or permed until I turned 18. However, virgin hair became a personal preference after witnessing a friend’s adverse reaction to a perm. Since then, I have only managed to flat iron my hair from time to time.

Have you ever cut your hair super short or did you ever transition and how did you overcome that?

No, I’ve never cut my hair super short or transitioned. I think if I walked through the door with short hair my family and friends would have a panic attack. They love my hair!

How would you describe your hair texture?

I have thick hair with a low/high level of porosity. So, I’ve been inducted into the “hall of frizz” more than once and know the struggle of waiting for hair to dry! It took a while for me to appreciate my high density, type 3C-4B hair especially the shrinkage. But, I’ve learned to embrace every curl, coil, and kink.

Tell us about your hair colour, how do you achieve it, and has it affected your hair negatively?

I’ve never dyed my hair permanently, but I do enjoy trying out temporary dyes. I dyed my ends red, blonde and brown before.

Which products do you use to wash and style your hair?

Since 2017, I’ve been using Bobeam Natural Products (IG: quita_bobeamceo) exclusively to wash and style my hair. If I’m not making my own pre-poo treatment, I like using Bobeam’s multi-purpose conditioners or oils as a pre-poo/leave-in for styling. Lately, I’ve been using their lavender hair oil as a pre-poo which leaves a nice tingling sensation.

Cocoa Cream, Revive, and Rootz Ice are some of my favourite conditioners from this brand. Since I like switching up products in my hair routine, I make it a point to stock up from this brand! When it comes to shampooing, I like using Bobeam’s shampoo bar called Honey Hemp & Green Tea or Coco Mango. Both bars leave my hair soft and lush which makes styling and detangling so much easier. Whenever I finish washing my hair, I always catch one of my family member’s nose in my hair. I get a lot of compliments regarding the fragrance it leaves. I love it! It’s my go-to!

What are your favourite hairstyles?

I hate having to stay still for such a long time when getting my hair done, so I’ve always been a fan of hair twists and twist outs. These two styles are so versatile and easy to maintain. I can literally rock a 2-in-1 hairstyle!

Tell us two things that helped you get the hair you have now (can be products, styles).

My hair thrives the most when I’m wearing protective hairstyles. Before I figured this tip out, I suffered from breakage and split ends. Second, a good aloe vera spray works wonders! It helps conditions, promotes growth and restores the pH balance of my hair.

Tell us 2 don’ts for your hair.

My hair is prone to breakage very easily, so excessive heat is a big no-no for me. For example, I prefer to air dry my hair rather than using a blow dryer. I only flat iron my hair once or twice per year. The second big “don’t” is a wet ponytail. By the time I take my hair down, I’m amazed by the tangles and fairy knots created in such a short time.
