How to wash your box braids in 5 easy steps

I had box braids installed 4 weeks ago and some folks did ask me how I wash my hair whilst braided. I know some people just decide they will not wash their hair for the entire time they have their braids on but I’m not about that life! I had a plan in mind. Below some pictures of my box braids freshly done!

1- Stick to a routine of washing your braids minimum every 2 weeks

In case you didn’t know an unhealthy scalp is the beginning and the end of all your hair problems. Keeping your scalp free of build-up and clean is very important to maintain your hair growing at a steady pace.

2- Use apple cider vinegar to dislodge any build-up

I filled a spray bottle with 1 part of apple cider vinegar and 2 parts of water then sprayed it on my scalp. Focus on the base of the braids only. Then I put on a plastic cap and let it work for 30 minutes. (ps: I had to use two plastic caps to fit all the hair). Rinse your scalp and move on to next step.

3- Dilute your cleanser/shampoo of choice

Dilute in a 3:1 ratio, meaning 3 parts of water for each part of cleanser. I used organic liquid castile soap.

You can also use bar soaps, just break a small piece and dilute it. Use your judgement to get the right consistency. It needs to be water-like and still foam but not thick as it will get stuck in between your braids and scalp.

Apply it to your scalp and massage it well. Repeat this process twice and rinse.

4- Dry your hair if you need to and apply any oil of choice

I used my old and trusted Remington hair dryer to dry the length of my hair and oiled my scalp with the herb-infused hair oil.

5- Tie a silk headscarf to tame flyaways and reduce frizz.

Finally, I tied a silk headscarf leaving my hair down to reduce any frizz. Just remove it when you’re ready to head out of the house and your hair should still look fresh.
