What is “transitioning”?
Transitioning to natural hair is the process of growing out your natural texture before cutting off the processed or damaged ends.
This means that you might cut your ends gradually and deal with two textures until you are fully natural.
Tell me more…
1- The first step is to stop relaxing your hair altogether and if you can avoid colouring too!
2- Then stop using heat tools. At least until you are fully natural. Even when you’re fully natural heat should be used sparingly.
What else…
3- Pre-poo your hair! If coconut oil is not the best choice for your hair you can use avocado or olive oil instead as their molecular structure is small enough to penetrate the hair shaft faster than most oils.
Be gentle!
4- I know dealing with two completely different hair textures can be hard, but don’t let it make you lose your cool with your hair! Be gentle when detangling, be gentle when doing and taking down styles, be gentle when washing, be gentle when brushing, be gentle!
Anything else?
5- Use protective and low manipulation styles to your advantage! These will help you build the confidence to rock your hair “au Naturelle” over time especially if you are planning to big chop and the change seems a lot to deal with at first. Wean of weaves and wigs slowly…We as black women know how hard it can be being confident with our natural hair due to all the social scrutiny!
Don’t be afraid to trim, please!
6- If you have long relaxed hair but you are making the choice to go natural due to breakage or the health risks of the chemicals found in the “creamy crack” or you envy the volume of natural hair, whatever reason why you made the choice, don’t be afraid to trim those damaged ends! Remember why you are doing it and also that if you care for it your hair will grow and you might achieve your length goals sooner than you thought.
Use good products
7- Don’t believe the hype and buy into expensive products that are not even natural or claim to be “organic” but the first ingredient is mineral oil. Only invest in products you know the ingredients are genuine and will nourish your hair from root to tip. Of course you always have the option to DIY some too. Educate yourself and you will see the difference it will make! Natural haircare doesn’t need to be complicated.
